Katrina's surge, around eight and a half metres at Pass Christian, did its worst damage on this stretch rather than in New Orleans. Mobile Bay funnels surge the same way — Frederic in 1979, Ivan in 2004 — and Sally in 2020 crawled ashore at Gulf Shores at little more than walking pace, which is what made it a flood. Mobile and Gulfport–Biloxi are small airports with few flights, so a closure usually means driving to New Orleans or Pensacola, and those are often under the same storm.
