Not one season but a moving one. Early storms form close by, in the western Caribbean and the Gulf; from August the long-track storms off Africa run through the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico; by October the western Caribbean is making its own again, which is how Melissa reached Jamaica at Category 5 in late October 2025. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao sit south of the usual tracks and are rarely hit. After a direct strike the airport is often the last thing to reopen: Irma wrecked the terminal at St Maarten in 2017, and it took years to rebuild.
