A coast that sticks out into the path of storms curving north. Hugo came ashore at Charleston in 1989 at Category 4. Florence in 2018 barely moved for two days and flooded Wilmington so thoroughly that the city was cut off by road; Helene in 2024 did its worst damage hundreds of kilometres inland, in the mountains around Asheville, which is why an inland airport is on this list.
