Rain, not wind, is what shuts Houston. Harvey stalled over the city in August 2017 and dropped more than 1,500 mm in places, closing both Bush Intercontinental and Hobby to passenger flights for days. Galveston took the deadliest hurricane in US history in 1900, and Ike's surge in 2008. The season starts early here — Beryl came ashore in July 2024 and left more than two million customers around Houston without power — and October is quieter than in Florida, because late storms tend to curve away to the east.
