Low, flat and partly below sea level, so surge and drainage decide what reopens. Katrina in August 2005 shut Louis Armstrong International to passenger flights for about two weeks; Ida came ashore sixteen years later to the day at Category 4 and cut power to the whole of New Orleans. The south-west around Lake Charles took Laura and Delta six weeks apart in 2020.
