Direct hits are rare — Iniki on Kauai in 1992 is the one people remember — because the cool water east of the islands usually weakens storms arriving from the Mexican side. What disrupts flights more often is a storm passing close enough to bring flooding rain, as Lane did in 2018, or wind: in August 2023 Hurricane Dora passed several hundred kilometres to the south, and the pressure difference between it and the high to the north drove the winds that spread the Maui fires.
