September is the worst month, but October is not far behind: late in the season, storms forming in the western Caribbean and the Gulf turn north-east into the peninsula, as Wilma did in 2005 and Milton in 2024. Airports close ahead of landfall rather than after it — Tampa and Orlando both shut for Ian in 2022 and again for Milton — and the peninsula is narrow enough that a storm coming ashore on one coast can close the other.
